Many thanks for your help. As you will porbably guess we are new to this, and being based in the UK it is difficult to get to grips with family history in Australia. I had wondered whether inheritance rules might not apply because the children were the product of a relationship with an aboriginal Australian and there is, as you note, no evidence of a marriage in Queensland. No evidence yet of the deaths of the children or their mother. I will explore other states for marriages but suspect that George Fenn Stephenson did not venture beyond Queensland or even much beyond Bundaberg, Cardwell, Bedford Creek and Kynuna after his arrival at Brisbane in 1875.
Thanks again for your advice and information. Mary
