Most likely explanation is that the children were born prior to any marriage, where as child born would not have any reference to a fathers name.
If the parent later married, then the children would have been able to be re regisitered with the name of the father listed.
The references I found have the four births listed under the surname of KYTE all born between 1889 and 1902 and then again under the surname of GRIGSON.
I can not find any listing for these children under the name of SMITH???
the marriage of Martin SMITH in 1895 may not be the same person, and it seems a Martin SMITH also married in 1896- of course this may not be the same Martin SMITH.
As for a subsequent marriage of GRIGSON/KYTE this may have been in another State or did not in fact marry but re registered the births to protect the children.
