I would be more inclined to think the Harbour ferries - I checked the electoral rolls & found
Living at San Souci in 1943 listed as Seaman and the same occupation in 1954 - living at Brookvale
Wonder if he was in the merchant navy? and retired from that to work on the ferries. (I don't see him on the WWII nominal roll & that includes the merchant navy so maybe not)
I looked for some archives didn't find alot
