You will probably find the marriage was anulled and all traces removed of it and the child born under the mothers name.

Not many women gave the children the criminals surname as it was just spiteful to the child. As he married under false pretences the marriage was NOT legal and with the wifes parents being well off, they probably had every trace of him removed from their lives.
