Thank you all for your help. I hadn't realised that her death took place as early as the late 1940s.
Her husband bought a tract of land from my grandfather and I have been trying to sort out the land transfers of the 'Hundreds of Onkaparinga'. Sylvia worked a couple of days each week for my grandmother and she was desperately unhappy, stuck in the middle of an uncleared block with no friends, car, telephone or any amenities.
She hanged herself and her husband abandoned the property, took the children and disappeared. There were rumours that is was not suicide which is why I had expected to find the report of an inquest at the very least.
But the information you have found for me is invaluable as it was a horror story from my childhood and now I know what happened and when. I always knew why ...
