Hi Timothy,

I do think that if any of Thomas's family had been killed by natives it would definitely have made the newspapers. I don't see anything at all on TROVE or New Zealand's Papers Past.

You could contact the corporate archivist at Unilever to ask if they can help. There may be correspondence amongst their records. This PDF gives a contact address for them http://pacificarchives.anu.edu.au/findingaids/PRC_Company.pdf but their website gives an email address http://www.unilever.com/aboutus/ourhistory/unilever_archives/

The records held by the ANU may also contain something of use.
