Hi, I've posted this on the England branch, but thought there might be someone here is Oz who might also be able to help me
I found on a 1861 english censes, my ancestor has put that his occupation was "Tailor and Collector of Robes" I certainly know what a Tailor is, but very confused as to what a Collector of Robes would be and what status that would have held. The ancestor is Thomas Tritton b. 1799 d. 1869 and he was listed as a gentleman in his Wills and Probate listing.
I came across a painting of him online that was being sold thru Bonhams and it shows him as a very distingushed looking gentlemen. At the time of his death in 1869 his estate was of some considerable amount, so his occupation must have seen him well.
Can anyone tell me what a "Collector of Robes" in 1861 would have been. Also, would love to know any other information about Thomas Tritton or his family. NOTE: I have the basic information on his son, Frank Tritton born.1832 who migrated to Australia in 1855(ie: siblings, parents, children bdm's) but happy to hearanything that might help me to research the family more.
Many thanks, Kerry
