Thanks for answering.

No the book I am thinking of it is not those directories.

I have just found a little old lady, here in Portland that actually has a volume (Vol 11). The book is called Victoria & Metropolis, Past & Present. Apparently Vol 1 is 'boring'. Vol 11 is about 'people'.

Obviously state libraries have copies, so I will see if I can inter-loan a copy.
