Do you have a copy of the service record? It should give an address for his next of kin and state their relationship. The Army did not easily accept names used as aliases and so I would also expect there to be some documentation in there to explain why his surname was changing.
You can have the service record digitised online at the NAA for a small fee by clicking on the "control symbol" link and then "request a copy".
