You are wonderful! Thanks for this information. This EJ Dawes is not my one. It is good to be able to rule this one out. My EJ Dawes married Olive Clara Jackson in 1915 in Sydney. He died in Melbourne in 1939.
He appears to be a "rolling stone" and left two very young children in NZ after his first "wife" died as a result of falling down some stairs while pregnant. I can't find a marriage to Sarah Ann Woolsey also spelt Wolsey. She came to NZ in 1885 as a single woman on the ship Doric. I will keep searching.
I have heard that he left NZ for South Africa c 1891 but can't substantiate this information. According tohis death cert he was in Western Australia for 45 years and Victoria 3 years but I am not sure that this is correct either. His occupation on his death cert was Retired Mining Engineer - a long way from a Butler that he was in the UK 1881 census.
