Hi Cindy , just a little correction on Australia , although not a country till 1901 , the continent had been referred to as Australia from about 1804. (Earlier as Terra Australis.) The penal Colony of New South Wales set up in 1788 , which cvered all of the continent excapt the far west . 1803 settlement in Hobert , part of NSW , became colony of Van Diemans Land in 1825 , and Tasmania in 1856. Port Phillip temporarily settled 1803 , part of NSW till 1851 , colony of Victoria formed 1851, 1824 settlement of Moreton Bay , part of NSW , became colony of Queensland in 1859 , 1836 settlemnt of Kangaroo Island , pert of NSW , became Colony ( not penal) of South Australia in 1856. AND New Zealand was part of NSW 1840-41.
Checked for birth of Matilda with any surname in 1817 , no result. Checked for 1876 , total of 132 with Matilda in their name , only one, Matilda Alice Timmins. No Matilda with any name that looks close to Lllis or Plumridge.
The first marriage of Lillis in NSW , is 1838 , James Lillis to Sarah Martin , first birth is their son Thomas in 1841 , first John born was 1864 to John and Joanna , first death was Elizabeth in 1831 , first John 1919 aged 62 years.
A convict John Lillis arrived in Hobart VDL , in 1833 from County Down in Ireland. The are two early convicts in NSW , Silvester and Peter , so no John.
On September 2 , 1877 a John Lillis , aged 24 , a bootmaker, arrived in Sydney NSW on a Bounty Ship , he looks like he came from Jersey , a Channel Island UK .
If you show any interest in this one , I may be able to obtain more information .
I am pretty sure Lillis is Irish
Cheers
