Hello David,
In your original message, you were interested in the Moorfield family in England and how they emigrated to Aust. I inherited my basic notes from an aunt and have since sourced information from other sources and often maybe assumption. John Moorfield married Mary Crossby on 25th July 1884 at Wigan (source w.w.w.familysearch.org/England/IGI/individual record). Children Peter b28th Nov,1824; Richard b4th Feb,1827; James b22nd July,1829.(source as above)
Richard Moorfield married Elizabeth Fairhurst on 29th Nov 1849 at Wigan. Children are as stated in your bible, although I used his death cert to obtain them. Writing is very poor and I'm pleased to see that what I thought was Frank is actually Noah and Mary had Anna for the second name, so somewhere the H was dropped. Also, I have no Elizabeth Ellen and instead a Septimus (at position 7). In order on death cert-Richard 47; Peter Edward dec; Peter Edward 42; John 38; George James dec; Paul 33; Septimus dec
; George James 30; Noah dec; Mary Anna Mariah dec.
Richard's death cert also gives father John occupation as Collier and Railway Employee and Richard's as Locomotive Engine Driver. He died in Clifton Hill,Vic,Aust,31st Dec, 1897. Not sure if he worked on railways here or just England.
Shipping Lists indicate that James (son of John and Mary, brother of our Richard) born 1827 was the first to emigrate in the Marco Polo in 1856, aged 27.
Next was Richard (my branch- son of Richard and Elizabeth)who married Ellen Clarke (using the name Richard Moorfield Fairhurst-snob value?) Dates are a little skewed but family story says he arrived on the Flying Cloud. His death cert 1919, says time in Aust 47 years so arrival date approx 1872. However, first child registered in Aust is 1875 and previous child is 1873 so sometime between these.Incidently, my grandfather is Laurence, born in Clifton Hill in 1887 and they went to Gippsland in 1888.
Next arrival, Richard, Elizabeth and George James in 1884 on Yarra Yarra, then Paul in 1888 on Liguria.
Peter Edward came out also (died in Sydney) perhaps with his brother Richard on the Flying Cloud as I haven't tracked it down yet.Family story is that grandfather Richard distilled seawater into fresh to earn his passage? My aunt notes that Peter Edward worked in the Royal Melb Mint as an engineer.
John is boarding in Liverpool in 1881 census and is thought to have gone to America.
My aunt also notes that Paul (your great grandfather) came to Australia with his friend Billy Dunkling in 1888.At the opening exhibition of the Melbourne Exhibition Building, Paul demonstrated the art of Saddlery and Billy demonstrated the art of Jewellery Making. These men remained lifelong friends. Paul later ran a Saddlery business in Albury and Howlong and Billy and his family continued in the Jewellery business (Dunklings the Jewellers) in Melbourne.
Well, I've probably gone on enough. Hope to hear if you find any more pieces to the puzzle.
Cheerio, Val.
