TREANORs of DESERTMARTIN,Derry&AUSTRALIA
I am tracing Michael Charles TREANOR,born c 1816 native place "Desertmartin, DERRY IRE". Parents Charles
TREANOR, coachbuilder(?) and Margaret O'REGAN.
He married Margaret GIBSON in Glasgow SCT 28 Aug 1838 and they were in Rutherglen SCT 1839, in Derry
Ire 1841, and thence emigrated to Australia on the "Thetis" (arr Wollongong NSW 1848), where he taught at
various Roman Catholic Schools (Wollongong, East Gosford, Penrith, Sutton Forest, Hartley & Sally's Flat), .
Their children were James Gibson, Mary Ann, John Thomas, Michael Charles, Philomena M, Margaret M, and
William Stephen F.
The ORNANCE SURVEY MEMOIRS of IRELAND Volume 31 says of the ECCLESIASTIC OLD CHURCH
OF DESERTMARTIN (PAGE 55):
"The following families are buried in this yard: COSKCHRAN, MCTRAINOR, MCDEVITT, TREANOR,
TRENOR, TRANER, MCCONMIE, HIGGINS MCCORK MILLER LEBAN, PROCTOR, BRYAN, STOKES,
HUGHES, MCCRACKIN, MARDOCK. The 12th 13th &14th names belong to the rectors of the parish. The
name TRANER is very abundant in the neighbouring parish of Kilcronaghan. It was introduced by the early
English settlers."
This chapter of the memoirs was written in 1836 byJames BOYLE with additions by J STOKES & C W LIGAR.
