Can’t help you with Owen right now, but I will definitely keep your grandparents in mind while searching. In the meantime, the following may help you get started on the Patersons.
John Paterson (1813-Bef 1864) & Agnes Spittal (1814-), daughter of Alexander Spittal and Helen Gibson, granddaughter of James Spittal and Ann Agnes Buchanan, and great-granddaughter of James Spittal and Janet Gray.
John Paterson and Agnes Spittal were married 05 Jun 1836 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland.Their family can be found in the 1841, 1851, and 1861 censuses forShettleston, Lanarkshire, Scotland.John’s occupation was shown as Coal Miner in 1841 and 1851.In 1861 his occupation had changed to Stone Miner which we think may have indicated that his health was deteriorating (that he could no longer work underground in the mines). When John's son Andrew was married in 1864, no occupation was listed for John. Our assumption is that John must have died between 1861 and 1864.We have not yet identified the family in the 1871 census.
John & Agnes’ children were:Robert Spittal Paterson (1837-1912); Andrew Spittal Paterson (1840-1891);Helen (Abt 1840-); John (Abt 1842-);James (Abt 1845-); William (Abt 1847-); Janet (Abt 1850-);Agnes (1854-1940); Margaret (1856); and Alexander (1858).
Robert S. went from Scotland, to Australia where we have his family documented until 1872; then to the U.S. where they first show up in Grundy Co., Illinois.Robert was never shown as a coal miner, but rather as having worked in mining-related businesses. In Australia, he worked on a large water/canal project in Western Australia. In the U.S., first as the proprietor of a coal company’s general store in Coal City, then as expanded railroad construction advanced westward, he moved to Osage County, Kansas, where he worked as a salesman for coal products. At least one of Robert and Andrew’s siblings, Agnes, also immigrated to the U.S., where she married and remained in Illinois.Interestingly enough, Robert’s oldest son, John Walker Paterson, who was born in Liverpool, England, before the family went to Australia, married in Kansas and took his family back to Australia in 1895 during the Gold Rush.He worked 13 years for the railway service in the locomotive department, then resigned in 1908 to devote himself to farming and land enrichment at Torbay.
The following information, along with virtually everything that I have for our family in Australia, was most graciously shared by Leah Jones in Western Australia.
Andrew and Sarah Jane were married May 19, 1864, Hawthorn (Suburb of Melbourne, Victoria).Their occupations were shown as Ploughman/Domestic Servant.Their usual residence was shown as Berwick (suburb on outskirts of Melbourne)/Abbotsford Street East Collingwood. Our guess is that Andrew may have worked for Sarah Jane’s father on their farm.Andrew Spittal Paterson died 1891, age 53, in Buchan, Gippsland, Victoria, Australia.
On http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.comhttp://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com, I found family tree information for the "Cotters, Ruths, Kealys, Clancys, Lyalls, etc.," which was last updated 18 November 2010, for the family of Andrew Spittal Paterson and his wife, Sarah "Sally" Jane Ward which added:
Marriage 2 - George Gaston - 1895 in Victoria, Australia
You may be interested to also know that Leah has recently been in contact with a ladywho is researching Andrew & Sarah Jane’s youngest son, John James Garfield Paterson who immigrated to Thames, NZ to work in the mines.
