FOUGHT IN SIX WARS
Queensland Veteran Dead
BRISBANE, Sunday. - Mr. William. K. Bryant, an old soldier, who fought in six wars, died in Ipswich on Saturday, sged 97 years. He was bom In Brisbane in 1839 and when aged I3 years was signed on for the famous Victory, which thenn was the recalving ship under Admiral Wellesley. When the Crimean War broke out in l854 Mr. Bryant landed on the peninsula with the Naval Brigade. He was present when the first fort on the Black Sea was taken. In 1855 Mr. Bryant returned home and rejoined the Victory, but In 1857. when the Indian Mutiny began, he was sent out on the 52-gun frigate Shannon. He took part in the march to relieve Cawnpore, and was present at the capture of Delhi. Later, he found himself on the Shannon, bound as a seaman gunnner to take part in the Chinese War, in which he won the Victoria Cross for scaling walls on an enemy fort and gaining valuable Informa-
tion.
Subsequently Mr. Bryant took part in the Maori wars, and in the American Civil War. in which he fought with both Fed- erals and Confederates. After the war he went on the land at Philadelphia, but re-Fix this text turned to Queensland in 1883, where he
lived until his death.
