Have you looked to see if he is on the census in England 1851 - which may confirm your idea.

Travel both ways at that time often didn't give the names of steerage passengers so you search is not an easy one. If he died in NSW 1835-50 only a very small proportion of burial records have survived so that would be another option.
Do you have any trace of him after he served his time?
