BDM indexes in Australia are by state & most contain parent names. Looking at the 1881 census I think the parents of your John are James U and Elizabeth Jackson - is this correct? The census shows a sister Mary U Jackson & although I don't easily see a birth for James U on Freebdm, I do see a birth for Mary Urwin in Sep 1870.
On the NSW BDM there is a death as follows
3203/1950JACKSONJOHNJAMES URWINELIZABETHRYDE
(parents James Urwin and Elizabeth, place Ryde - a suburb of Sydney)
The death certificate (or a transcript which is cheaper) will give the name of his parents, wife and children, years spent in Australia (and in which state) where buried - as well as age, cause of death etc.
