Hi Trevor,
being new to this are you aware that you can obtain much information from the National Archives of Australia in the way of official records etc?.
Take for example the WWI records of Robert Little CHANCE is online.
It will tell you:
*he was born in Walhalla,
*he was 24 years and 6 months at enlistment on 20/07/1915
*he was single
*he was a Miner
*next of kin was father Elija CHANCE
I think you get the picture now.
Just click on the following link
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspxhttp://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx
then *SEARCH AS A GUEST*
Just try searching with the SURNAME first and also type in VIC (for Victoria) to narrow the search down.
When you find a subject of interest have a look and see if there is an ICON with the wording "View Digital Copy" next to it. If so click on it and digital copies of the original records will be revealed.
You will most likely find other relatives as well.
This is a free site.
Have you also had a look at the Australian War Memorial?
Much valuable information is to be had there also.
Can I offer one suggestion to assist researchers if you request assistance? By now you have most likely noticed that all of the responses to your questions, The SURNAMES are written in capital letters. This can really help sort surnames from given names. eg: John Henry could be John HENRY (HENRY being the surname) or JOHN,Henry (JOHN being the surname)
good luck mate and enjoy your Family Research.
Tony Johnston. NT
