Michelle,

Just an update on my Lewis's from Mudgee. My guess about William Lewis was right.

I recently spent 5 days in Mudgee doing some snooping. Spent some time with the lovely people from the Mudgee Historical Society.

The information I found was beyond my wildest expectations.

It turns out that William's father Richard was with Evans when he discovered the Bathurst region. He later was Head Superintendant for Mr Cox while building the road over the Blue Mountains to Bathurst and later was chosen by Macquarie to be the Superintendant of Bathurst. Apparently he was a bit of an explorer and went on some of the later trecks up the Macquarie and Lachlan River and was also involved in the discovery and settlement of Mudgee. The obelisk in Lawson Park, Mudgee mentions him.

Unfortunately, Richard drowned in the Marthaguy River near Gilgandra in 1828 while on an exploration trip. William also drowned in 1870 while trying to save sheep during a flash flood (his body was not found for two months).

So from my experience the local historical society is a must to verify your hunches.

I hope this did not seem boring, as you can imagine I was quite surprised by the results.

Regards
Jane
