Gail,
Here is a little more information that I think probably fits into your picture:
In the newspaper "The Southern Australian" 7 Oct 1850 the following article appeared.
"An inquest was held on the 2nd instant, by F.Davison, Esq., at Haughton Village, on the body of Mary Jane Trenwith, aged 11 years, drowned in the creek the day before. Her mother, as was her custom, had sent her for a pail of water, but, as she did not return, went in a few minutes afterwards to see what had become of her, but could see nothing but the pail bottom upwards, floating in the water-hole. She instantly gave the alarm, and after several attempts the body was at length brought up by a miner, Richard Carlington, having been nearly three-quarters of an hour in the water. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. Near the same place a child was drowned some months ago, and a woman also narrowly escaped the same fate."
I have been unable to find any record of the birth of Mary Jane Trenwith in Australia between 1838 and 1842 but there is a birth listing for Mary Jane Bray in Redruth in the December quarter 1839. Could this be her?
Richard Carlington who recovered the body was our Johanna's brother-in-law! He was married to Thomas Trenwith's older sister.
In case you don't already have this - Johanna was part of the Trenwith family group that came out to South Australia on board the "Aboukir" arriving in Adelaide on Saturday 4th September 1847.
Bill
