COWAN - Scotland to Australia
There were apparently five Cowan brothers working as crew on the Duchess of Argyle in June-October 1842 when the ship sailed from Greenock to Auckland. Apparently three brothers left the ship in Australia, and two sailed on to Auckland. I am related to Henry Cowan, who settled in Auckland.
Can anybody please confirm that the ship stopped in Australia in passing? I believe that this was the usual practice for ships en route to NZ, but I have found no record of the Duchess of Argyle stopping in Australia en route.
The Duchess of Argyle was the first ship of immigrant settlers to Auckland from Scotland, so the Australian stop would have been only to top up supplies.
