WEXFORD IRELAND, convicts,Healy, Whelan, Cash, Hayden, Carroll, Thorton, Cashin,
Hello,
I have some information available to researchers looking for immigrants from from Wexford Ireland. This information came our family research for Owen Healy and Catherine Cashin
This is what we have found:
The following information came from the Outrage Papers (located at the National Archives in Dublin) and the Wexford Independent newspaper (fische at the Wexford Library and originals at the National Library in Dublin):
On December 29, 1847 Michael (referred to as Mick) Whelan was involved in a robbery in the Deeps of the Slaney River, near Crossabeg and Crory Middle (just north of Wexford) It involved five other men.
The names of the individuals involved were:
Owen Healy (my ancestor), Martin Carroll, Nicholas Cash, Thomas Hayden, John Thorton was also involved but not charged. At the trial that took place in 1848 all the charged men were convicted and sentenced to 7 years transportation. I do not know what happened to Michael Whelan. Thomas Hayden was sending through petitions to the court to be sent to the Cape of Good Hope with his family.
You can find the synopsis and transportation information at the National Archives in Australia
