Hi Margaret,
Please do not feel silly about offering help to me.I have been at it for about ten years now and have amassed a large amount of information- I did post on the BECKHAM name board, the main name I am researching and received a couple of replies, but I think I had more information than they- but that is the way it goes!.
I am really down to the stage of filling in gaps and have not gone back that far into Norfolk where they originated from- mainly from around Mattishall Burgh in Norfolk. Two brothers arrived in Australia 1843 as exiles for stealing a sheep and went on to become successful farmers, finally settling in Charlton, Victoria.
I have access to Ancestry and have found a Little more about them in England, but it starts to get quite difficult before the late 1700's where I have got to, I doubt if I will be able to get back mush further.
No nobility in the line- they were rat catchers by trade!!!- had large amount of dogs that they used to clean out factories etc. Family legend has it that they were set up with the sheep carcass by neighbours who did not like the noisy dogs at home!!!
Thank you very much for your reply and offer to help, it is really appreciated, although I still enjoy helping others, a lot of the time, never a word of thanks, but I guess I do it for the enjoyment, not the thanks
Kindest Regards
Gordon
