POWELLs from County Clare to Victoria 1839 & 1841
POWELLs from County Clare to Victoria 1839 & 1841:
I am seeking to make contact with descendants of the following POWELLs.
Thomas POWELL and his wife, Susanna POWELL (nee McNAMARA), emigrated to Australia from County Clare, Ireland, on the 'William Metcalfe' on 15 Nov 1839.Their baby son, Patrick, died aged (1&1/2 years) on the voyage.According to the shipping records, Thomas and Susanna POWELL were immigrants, British subjects, who had been introduced into the colony of New South Wales on Government bounty.Thomas POWELL was the son of Cornelius POWELL and Mary POWELL (nee MORO(O)NEY) of the townland of Affick in the parish of Tulla in County Clare.
After remaining in Melbourne for a few years, Thomas POWELL and his family went to the Geelong district. They located themselves at Fyansford where Thomas carried on the business of wheelwright and blacksmith. In 1845 he relocated his business in Clare Street Geelong.Later Thomas built the Union Hotel in Malop Street and conducted the business of a publican or hotelkeeper.
The address of Thomas POWELL as at 30 Jun 1848 and 3 Jul 1849, according to the Electoral Lists 1841-1851, was a freehold dwelling at Malop Street, Geelong.
Thomas became well known as a brewer in Geelong and Stawell.
Connor POWELL and Ellen POWELL (nee CAHIR) and their children (Michael, Patrick, Dennis, Maria, Martin and Margaret), from Tulla, Co Clare Ireland, left London for Melbourne on the 'Neptune', arriving on 29 Mar 1841.They also were bounty migrants.
The address of Connor POWELL as at 3 Jul 1849, according to the Electoral Lists 1841-1851, was Barrabool Hills.
Connor and Ellen POWELL were accompanied by Ann POWELL (20, laundress), Cornelius POWELL (19 labourer) and John POWELL (18 labourer) on the 'Neptune'.
I am a descendant of John POWELL who married Catherine DONOHUE at St Mary's Catholic Church, Geelong, on 27 June 1847.
