Hi Klint,
I've been talking with a friend who has tracing family for a lot longer than I have and she has alot of experience with tracing English ancestors... Here are her suggestions.
For more information on immigration try the Shipping records (which should be available from large libraries like State libraries). She said that sometimes they have what counties the immigrants came from listed.
For English BDM certificates from 1837 try this site http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/births/obtainingbirthcertificates/index.asphttp://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/births/obtainingbirthcertificates/index.asp at the Office of National Statistics. You can also get Joy Murrin to obtain the certificate. See her site at http://www.joymurrin.com.au/ENGLAND%20WALES%20CERTIFICATES.htmhttp://www.joymurrin.com.au/ENGLAND%20WALES%20CERTIFICATES.htm
She has a link to where you can go to look up the GRO indexes to obtain the required reference numbers to get the certificates.
For records prior to this you'll have to go to Parish records.
Once you find out where in England your ancestors came from try searching the 1851 census. (which is not available online and which you should check the LDS or Latter Day Saint Family history centre)
I hope this helps
Ina
