Condell Robert - C. Wicklow - b. 1834
I have a Robert Condell in my past who was born around 1834 in County Wicklow. I think he came to Sydney Australia in the 1850s, married his first wife and had six children, 4 of whom (3 males, 1 female)were still alive in 1877. One of them was mentioned in "The Ballad of Ben Hall" as "Cowardly Sgt Condell" because he killed Ben Hall, the Australian bushranger who was a popular folk hero.
In 1874 Robert, by that time a widower, married Mary Jane Armstrong from Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. They lived in Sydney and he was a boot shop owner and/or manufacturer. They had two children, Florence Elizabeth Condell b. 1875 and d. 1968 and Ernest who was born in 1877 and died the same year. Family lore says Robert went bankrupt in the 1890s.
His previous wife's name could have been Jane Kineer but am not sure and I have often wondered if there was any connection with Condell Park, a suburb of Sydney. The name Condell is not common here.
Look forward to hearing if anyone thinks they have any connection with my family.
Ailsa.
