Extract from The Australian Royal Humane Society records…
"William Buxton, Youanmi, WA, miner, aged 28, who risked his life in attempting to rescue Peter Daly, aged 44, from an explosion in the Youanmi Gold Mine on July 29, 1913. The men were working on the 300ft. level in the mine, and had lit eight holes in a winze, 30 feet deep. They were climbing to the level, but when about half way up Daly fell back to the bottom of the winze. Buxton went down after him, and with a pocketknife attempted to cut the fuse, but found it was too late, as it had burned too far. He then began to climb to the level to get the bucket, to remove Daly, but as he did the charge exploded, and he was blown out of the winze on to the level. The body of Daly was blown to pieces."
