Dear Gordon and Michelle,
Thank you for your replies -- Gordon's with lots of "how to" information, and Michelle's with the interesting possibility of a William Cameron in the 9th Australian Light Horse Regiment, killed at Gallipoli.
Unfortunately, this William Cameron doesn't seem to be our cousin. www.anzacs.org said he was from Letterfinlay, Rushworth, Victoria and his occupation was commission agent/farmer; he was 28 (too old) and his parents' address, 'Lochaber', 36 Elms Road, East Malvern, Victoria, didn't sound right because our William Cameron's house "Cameron Lodge" was on Mount Macedon. But you were very good to look for him -- thank you.
I did find a couple of remote possibilities by searching for other family given names. Cameron men for several generations were all named William, Alexander or George (the Scottish naming pattern with which you may be familiar). I found two Australian soldiers from Victoria, Alexander Cameron & Leslie George Cameron, and have saved their records pro tem.
MEANWHILE, I have taken Gordon's advice and am trying to get William & Katie's death certs, which may list a child. Could find any way to order them from the Victoria records website, so I've emailed [email protected] to ask for instructions.
If nothing else, genealogy searches teach one tenacity!
Thank you both again for your help. I'll let you know of any progress.
All best,
Mignon
