Barbara,

Have you tried to get Nettie Austin`s death certificate to see if it names her parents? There is a member tree at Ancestry.com that has Nettie & her parents. It gives her death year as 1984 in Montgomery, AL. There is a SS Death Index entry for Nettie Kirk who was b. Jan 1881 & died Jan. 1884 in Montgomery. If you can`t get the death record you could send for Nettie`s SS5 form from the SS Admin. That would have her parents names; she would have filled the form out herself at the time she applied for a SS account. You can search the index & then generate a letter to request the SS5 here: http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
