Howdy: I don't have much of anything on my Austin family other than my 4th great grandmother (Elizabeth Austin) was born in the late 1795-99 in Tennessee (per several census reports) and according to the 1880 census both her parents were born in North Carolina. She married (unknown date or place) somewhere around 1815-18 to Larkin Gipson, a resident of Wayne County, Kentucky. They resided there and Larkin died 1869-70 and Elizabeth lived with a son in Wayne County in 1870 and by 1880 was residing with another son (John M. Gipson) in Sartain, Barren County, Kentucky. That is the last known record of her. I assume she may have died in that county, but no documentation on that. I picked up on John Austin and Rachel Denny since they were married in Wayne County, Ky., and he was from North Carolina with ties to the Austins in Tennessee. I knew he wouldn't be Elizabeth's father as they were married after her birth, but thought perhaps there might be some connection (uncle possibly). Then I also found a Sally Austin who married in Wayne County, KY., on Dec 1, 1819 to an Alfred Coffey. I can't find anything else about her, but her age could fit a possible sister to my Elizabeth. Those are the only two early day Austin marriages I can find in Wayne County, Ky. I have sometimes wondered if my Larkin Gipson might have crossed over the border into Overton County, TN., which borders Wayne County and married Elizabeth there as all those records were burned by the soldiers during the Civil War. I have found some Austins on early Tennessee tax lists that could fit to be my Elizabeth's parents in such counties as Grainger, Jefferson, Claiborne, Greene & Washington Counties (and several further away counties). A listing of Larkin and Elizabeth's children are: John, Permelia "Millie" (named for Larkin's mother), Rhoda Jane, Isaac, Mary "Polly", William Irvan, Francis Marion, Nancy E., Shelby, Sophronia, & Amanda Harden Gipson. I mention these names since it is possible some may be named for Elizabeth's mother and Father. No child was named, however, for Larkin's father Stephen. If anything in this ramble opens up any possibilities as to Elizabeth Austin's place in the family, I will be very interested to hear. Many thanks, Tom Goldrup Notify Administrator about this message?
