Re my previous message, the Austins from whom Stephen Austin is descended left Wythe County in 1798.Again from Mary Kegley... "On June 8, 1798, Moses and wife and two children (including his five-year-old son, Stephen F.), his brother-in-law Moses bates, his wife and two sons, slaves and workers for the mines -- forty in number -- set out with horses, nine loaded wagons, and a coach and four horses for Missouri...... The Moses and Stephen Austin era in Virginia had ended.
However, there was at least one Austin still there."Shortly after their departure, Charles Austin sent a letter bemoaning his troubles which had hampered the work at the mines in June 1798."
In 1803, Charles Austin conveyed to James Newell the Bingamins Bottom tracks on the east side of the New River.
Also, in the 1880 census, there are 17 separate index entries for the surname AUSTIN in Wythe County, Virginia.
