Violet Austerberry born in 1869 was the daughter of Joseph Austerberry born in Oldham UK in 1830 to John Austerberry and Anne Evans. Joseph crossed the Atlantic in 1851 on the 'Empire State'to New York. His uncle Robert Austerberry (John's brother) had settled in Philadephia in the 1830s. Joseph went to Calfornia in the gold rush and then crossed the Pacific to Australia still in search of gold. After moving around Australia for a while he married Frances Battersby at Adelaide Lead in 1856. He settled in the Stawell/St Arnaud area where his descendants are still sheepfarmers. Joseph and Frances had William 1857 - 1871, Rachael Ann 1859-1860, Rachael Jane 1860 (married 1885),Edward 1862-1865, Joseph 1865-1940, Henry 1867-1877, Violet 1869 (married 1890), William 1871-1924, Albert 1874-1916, Frederick 1876-1969, Walter 1878 - 1918. All Austerberrys in Australia today are descended from Joseph (known as Lanky Joe).

Joseph's grandfather was Edward Austerberry born in 1760 in Yorkshire UK Two thirds of the Austerberrys in the world today are descended from Edward's eight sons (including myself).
