Happy New Year! I am researching Lewkenors of Sussex, but have come across, what I suspect is a link with Jane Austen. Margaret Lewkenor of West Dean married John Austen abt 1613. Her brother, Christopher, Recorder of Chichester, Royalist colonel in civil war, had two daughters: Elizabeth bap 1630, and Francis, bap 1632. According to Comber's Sussex Genealogies, Frances married Michael Martyn of co.Oxford; children: 1. Richard Martyn, Devisee of Sir Richard Knight, Kt. Assumed name of Knight. d.s.p. 2. Christopher Martyn, assumed name of Knight. d.s.p. 3. Elizabeth md 1stly her 1st cousin, William Woodward Knight of Chawton, Hants. d.s.p. Md 2nd Bulstrode Peachey, assumed name of Knight on his marriage in 1725. Elizabeth md Edward Woodward Knight of Chawton, Hants. Had issue William Woodward Knight of Chawton, Hants. d.s.p. Md his 1st cousin Elizabeth Martyn (as above). According to www.AOAGS.org/RsearchCentre "Austins of America" p.302, Feb 1989: "Mr Knight was thus second cousin by marriage to George Austen, and he acknowledged his cousinship by presenting him to the rectory of Steventon in Hants, which he inherited, a part of the Lewkenor property, from Mrs.Elizabeth Knight." I am trying to find a link between John Austin of the Lewkenor marriage and Rev.George of Steventon Can anyone help? I would be happy to pass on any information regarding the Lewkenors. Cheers, Gillian Notify Administrator about this message?
