In mid-Alabama, John William (or Wm. Ralph) Austin, bn. 1839 settled down with his bride, Mary Elizabeth Sutherlin, Sutherland, or Southerland bn. 1849 and raised a family. The first was a daughter, Mary Alice Austin Hosey bn 1871, John Charlie Austin bn 1872 m. Sudie Nolen, Julia Austin, bn.1875, Lou or Lucinda Austin Merrell bn 1879, William Lawson Austin bn 1885 m. Ludie Thornton, George Washington Austin bn 1886 m. Loula Bell Honeycutt and James Allen Austin bn 1891 m. Ruth Ambrella Roberson. They gave many conflicting dates and information to anyone who needed to have information on them. They shrouded themselves in a mystery which still exist today. We would love to know more about our great-grandparents and settle the "rumors" about "out-law gangs" connections to the original "Austin settlement in Austin, Tx." and the story that Mary Elizabeth Sutherlin's people had threatened to kill John Wm. if they ever found them. What could they have done so bad ? Was he her older uncle or cousin as some have claimed and he "stole her away from her home after being run out of Tx for horse rustling" or is this some far-fetched story ? I do know this ; when their grandchildren would ask, "What is Grandma and Grandpa Austin's names"? (as in a first name)-they were sharply told, "you don't need to know their names, you are mean enough already"!! In those days, children didn't get into adult business and were to be seen and not heard, but I can say, our family had very sweet and loving adults who nurtured the Austin children and they turned out very good. John William Austin may have had two brothers, Rock and Dred. The states mentioned for them are Ga. La. Ms. Tx. and Alabama. If you can help with information, please let us know. Thanks, Linda Hood Austin
