The first Ausmuses in American
I've been doing some research on the first Ausmuses in America for anyone who is interested. Just to thoroughly confuse everyone even more, I've found the following timeline of early Ausmuses in America:
On September 14, 1749 Pieter Amoes (possibly pronounced Asmus) arrived at the Port of Philadelphia on ship Two-Brothers Captained by Thomas Arnot. (List 233A of Pennsylvania German Pioneers)
In 1752, everyone knows about Johann Peter Assum on the ship, Neptune. However, I'm still not convinced that this is Peter Ausmus, because the surnames were both two distint families from Germany. And because on September 10, 1761, Peter Assum is naturalized in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. So if the ship's transcriber made an error on Peter last name (Assum vs. Ausmus) then why was it repeated again nine years later? Also, the 1787 tax list for Washington County, TN lists Peter's son, Philip as head of household and being over 60 years old. Therefore, he would have been at least 26 years old on the ship Neptune with his father and would for sure be listed as a passenger (not as a child under 19 as Harry Ausmus had stated in his book).
On April 8, 1762, Anna Margaretha Ausmus is born to Philip Ausmus and Anna Margeretha (same name as child). Then on May 9th 1762 at the Stone (St. Jacob's) Union Church in Codorus Township, York County, PA, Philip baptises her. Also in 1762, Philip is lving across the Codorus Creek and squatting on 148 acres of land in Manheim Township, York County, PA. To receive a patent, he has his property surveyed in 1768 and moves shortly after to Virginia. The surveyors nicknamed his parcel "Barrens" and probably wasn't the best piece of land. However, adjacent to his property was an owner by the name of "George Ross and Company". He was a prominant Torry lawyer and Elected to Continental Congress, 1774, 1776-77; Colonel in the Continental Army, 1776; Vice president of the Pennsylvania constitutional convention. George Ross probably never stepped foot on the parcel next to Philip's but it still an interesting fact.
On Oct 3, 1764 Anna Maria Ausmus is born and baptised at the same church listed above. Philip's wife must have died during birth because during a third baptism, Anna Elisabetha is listed as mother of a third, daughter, Maria Chatarina Ausmus on August 13, 1768. This second wife of Philip is probably Anna Elizabeth Neva.
In 1766 Petter Assomsis is listed in an Augusta County, Virginia couthouse, as a "supernumerary" (extra juror). (Chalkley Volume 2 )
In 1775 ??? Ausmus is listed as a Hessian Troop in North America. That same year, Michel Asmus is listed as a Hessian troop but is sent to Quebec, Canada.
In 1775, According to the 1850 Census for Brown Co., IL, Peter Ausemus is born in Virginia.
Between April and December of 1777, Captain John Conrad Ausmus is listed as a gunner in Capt. Jonathan Edes's co., Col. Crafts's regt. He also takes the Oath of Allegence in 1778 and is listed in the return of provisions delivered the State train of artillery commanded by Lieut. Col. Paul Revere, dated Castle Island, May 8, 1779; Capt. Warner's co.; said Osimus credited with allowance from April 15 [1779], to May 8 [1779], 21 days.
In 1781 Johann Asmus and Henrich Assmus are listed as a Hessian Troops in the American war for Independence. He takes the oath of allegence in 1782.
In 1782, an unknown Martha is born in Maryland. She is listed as age 78 (and states her name as Martha Ausmus) in 1860 Census for Claiborne County living with Benjamin Ausmus Sr. (b. 1801) Both state that they are born in MD. However, up to that time, Benjamin and his wife Anna Christina Dunn, had always stated that he was born in Tennessee. In 1870, Anna restates Tennessee as her place of birth (She is living with Sampson Edwards and daughter, Malinda (Ausmus) Edwards.
According to Philadelphia 18th Century City directories, In 1785, John Asmos, a blacksmith, is living at the corner of 6th & Arch street in Philadelphia. He is also listed at living on 5th street between Race and Vine Street. A grocer, named Peter Ozeaus is also listed in neigborhood, However, there is no variation of spelling in two accounts. John is living a few blocks away from Betsty Ross' or [Elizabeth Griscom Ross Claypoole (1752-1836)]
In 1796, a Peter Ausmus is born in Virginia. He is listed as a (Widow) at age 74 in 1870 living with son William E. Ausmus. Peter was born in VA both Parents born in PA.
Other than Chalkley, I have absolutely no info on the Ausmuses in Virginia. If anyone has anything I'd love to get a copy, especially tax lists.
