Hi Yawl I got some more info on the DNA Project. If we do it we would need an administrator and a decision on how many per group. I have at least 8 southern Altman/Aultman groups. Go look at the Watts Project to see how you like that set up - http://www.familytreedna.com/public/wattsfamilies/ Here is the info. Diane Go to http://www.familytreedna.com Family Tree DNA is based in Houston. They set up Surname projects, and there is no Aultman/Altman Project, so you can start your own. You need to commit to 5 kits, but I found that that number is really not a problem. I have purchases 8 so far, including some for Watts relatives, which counts, even though I set up a Mustard Project. You don't have to pay for them all at once, and you can order them for other people as needed. The 12 Marker kit retail is $159, but you get a $30 discount if you set up a surname project. That probably is the best one to start with, then the same sample can be used to extend the test to 25 markers, and finally 37, which is fairly new. What happens is that when you match someone with 12 markers, or within 10/12, then you, as project administrator, and they (if they signed a release), are notified, as well as the people that are matched. All kits have a number, and no names except at Family Tree DNA. You and the tested person are the only ones that can release the names. Don't go by the prices that you see on the price page that is on the link. There is a special price list for Project Administrators. They have upped their prices since I did it, but I think it is still reasonable. As administrator, you set up a page, and even a web page, defining why, and who you want to test, and include all of the allied surnames that you think might be related. Then when someone with those names notify you that they want to be tested, you order the test kit for them, and it is shipped directly to them. The results take four to six weeks to complete. Also, what you want to do is locate the males in the family that will do it. The reason being is that only the Y-chromosome is tested first, as it is only passed from father to son, and not to females. Notify Administrator about this message?
