My Great grandfather came Germany to New York then to Michigan in the mid to late 1800's, the Altman name was spelled Aultmann and changed to Altman with my grandfather.
I got this information from a web site about names:
Aultmann
Origin: German
Spelling variations include: Altmann, Alltman,Altmanns, Altmanne, Alltmanne, and others.
First found in Lower Bavaria, which became the fertile source of the many succeeding branches of the family name.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Anthon Altman, who settled Philadelphia in 1749. Wilhelm Altman settled Philadelphia in 1749. Barbara Altmann
settled in Texas in 1855. Doro Altmann, age
36, settled in Texas in 1850.
