Thanks for your response! I had read the info from the Texas Handbook about Henry Augustine. I believe it to be the same, timeline seems good, and seems would be quite a coincidence for a different Henry Augustine to go from Autauga Co., AL to Texas at that time. I am pasting below the reference to the incident. My curiosity was roused more when I went to Autauga County, AL for research and in one publication and also the person at the Historic/Genealogy Society there referred to the incident as a "duel". Was hoping some Augustine descendant might have info on this. From the book "Autauga County, The First Hundred Years, 1818-1918": > > "Cruikshanks, another of the business men of the place in its early > history, the tragedy of whose death is among the first of its kind in > the country, might here be noticed. Some misunderstanding between him > and Henry Augustine, whose father resided at or near the place > afterwards known as the Huey place, terminated their meeting in the > streets of Washington and Augustine shooting Cruikshanks and inflicting > a wound from which he soon died. Augustine was arrested and lodged in > jail. Some time after a writ of habeas corpus was being taken to > Montgomery by the sheriff of Autauga county and his deputy and were met > by a brother of Augustine and a near relative who rescued him from the > hands of the officer and safely conducted him to Texas which was then a > safe retreat for those fleeing from the penalties of the law they had > violated." > > (Yes, the writing is that poor.)
