Descendants of Johan Elias Ours (Auer) (7310)
Generation One
1. Johan Elias1 Ours (Auer) (7310)1 was born between 1700 and 1720 at Singen, Baden-Durlach,
Germany.2,3 He married Catherine Barbara Matthias (7311) on Jan 21, 1738 at near Karsruhe, Singen, Baden-
Durlach, Germany.1,3 He died between 1788 and 1790 at Hardy, (West) Virginia.1
In West Virginia and neighboring states, the Ours surname begins with the arrival of the ship Edinburg in
Philadelphia 14 Sept. 1753 [Captained by James Russell]. "Johannes Awer" and other Germans with names
familiar in the South Branch entered the colony. Johann Auer (pronounced Our), wife and child were given
permission that year to leave the principality of Baden-Durlach. Their village, Singen, is by the Black Forest and
near Karsruhe. It typically required 3-5 months to complete a journey down the Rhine river to Rotterdam and an
arduous Atlantic crossing aboard a crowded tiny sailing vessel.
Johann Elias Auer married Catharina Barbara Matthias 21 Jan. 1738 in Singen. A son, Johannes Auer, was born
and baptized Nov. 27, 1739. Today, as then, the Lutheran Church stands on a rise above the community which,
itself, has not changed greatly over the years. Why leave Singen to live in the frontier wilderness of Virginia?
Severe economic conditions and lack of opportunity were surely motives. "By 1755 they had traveled up the
Shenandoah and crossed the mountains, perhaps via Brock's Gap, to settle at the junction of North and South
Mill Creeks. A son, "Sigmon" was born that year in "Hampshire" County.
John Our and family lived thru the dangerous times of the French and Indian Wars on their South Branch Manor
leasehold John died 1788-1790. According to the records of the old" German" North Mill Creek Church,
"Catherine Ours" (b. 1716) wife of John O. died Feb. 2, 1802. Most likely they were buried in the cemetery next
to the Brake Church in the row of unmarked graves adjacent to Sigmon and his family.
John Godfrey Our, who had traveled with them from Singen, was restless and over the years lived in Hardy,
Rockingham, Monongalia and Harrison counties. He married Anna Maria "Weatherholt" of Rockingham, 12
Jan. 1776. Her family lived up in Brock's Gap. Their children included Nicholas, John, Henry and Sarah. The
boys may have been born in Rockingham or Hardy, but the family was living near Buckhannon in 1795 when
Indians massacred the Bozarth family. John and Henry served with the militia during the war of 1812. Nicholas
and Henry resided near Buckhannon. Sarah lived in Mason Co. and John crossed the Ohio into Meigs Co.
Godfrey and Anna Maria probably remained near Buckhannon. John Godfrey's death was after July 1801 and
Anna Maria about 1810.
In 1780 Sigmon Our married Mary Simon. Their children included Catherine, Ann Maria, Elizabeth, Eve,
Sarah, Jacob, Susanna, Solomon, John, Andrew and Jonathon. Were there others? Sigmon served with the
militia during the Revolutionary War. His grave in the old North Mill Creek Church Cemetery is marked with a
very worn stone (5 Sep. 1844). A marker recognizing his military service was dedicated in 1988. Mary (d. about
1854), his wife, was living with Jonathon in 1850. Sarah married William Weese. His family was probably also
from the area near Singen. Jacob traveled to Harrison Co. and in 1816 married Nancy Crislip. The younger
brothers puchased land above Rough Run (Conway Ours' place) in 1835. Solomon (d before 1870) married
Sallie George and Johathon (d 190 1) Catherine Rice. . Both families remained on this tract. John (d 1864 in a
Home Guard Skirmish \\ith McNeills's Rangers at Johnson Run) had relocated to North Mill Creek and Married
Elizabeth Kimmel, possibly his second wife. Andrew (d 1885) moved to the Hopeville/Smoke Hole Cavern
area. He married Elizabeth Skidmore and later Mary 1. Kimble.

There are many spellings of the family and individual names. Our in all it's variations appears as late as 1850.
Yet Ours is noted early, appears increasingly in the records and becomes the accepted name later in the 1800s.
Ours families living near Petersburg descend from John Our but the connections for many are not yet
established. Surely John and Catherine had other children.
Submitted by Elliott Ours, Shepherdstown, WV.2,4 He was also known as (7310) Johannes Awer.2 According
to "Immigrants in Pennsylvania from 1727 to 1776", he went to Pennsylvania.5 Johan Elias Auer, aka Johannes
Auer, took the Oath of Allegiance in Rotterdam, Germany, on September 14, 1758.4

He travelled with Sigmon and family from Singen, Germany.
He lived in Hardy, Rockingham, Monongalia, Harrison, and probably Buckhannon in Upshur County.1 This
family was living in Buckhannon in 1795 when the Bozarth family was massacred by Indians.1

He moved to the Buckhannon settlement about the time of the murder of the Bozarth family, near Lorentz,
and his sons John Ours, Nicholas Ours Sr., and Henry Ours Sr., were among the first residents and settlers in the
Buckhannon Valley. Chichman Ours was a soldier in the War of 1812.7 He was also known as (7117) Seakman.
All of the children were baptized at North Mill Creek.1 OURS - OWER - OUR - AUER
The first Ours ancestor we have record of in America was John Our, who arrived in the Port of Philadelphia in
1753. Through court records in Hardy County we find that Lord Fairfax leased land lying in the South Branch
Manor to John Our
on August 3 1773. This land was described as being situated East of the South Branch of the Potomac and on
the west side of Mill Creek. In another record dated 1790 it is shown that a certain tract of land was in the
possession of Seakman. -
Records show that Godfrey Our and Sigmon Our were the sons of John Our. In late information we find that
Godfrey Our was living in Harrison County and was probably the ancestor of the Ours families living around
Buckhannon and on into South Eastern Ohio.
In death records of the North Mill Creek Luthern Church is found Catherine Ours (1716- 2-2-1802 wife of John
Ours. A record of marriage of Johan Elias Auer to Catharina Barbara Matthias in 1738 was found in Karlsruhe,
Germany.
It has been proved that Sigmon Our is the same person as Cichman - Sithman Searchman Our (Ower) (Ours),
the name used on pension records from the American Revolution. He enlisted in March 1778 and received an
honorable discharge at the end of his service.
Sigmon Our was born in Hampshire County, Va. in 1755 and died in Hardy County 9/1511844. In Pendleton
County in 1780 he married Mary Simon (1761-1851) and to them were born 13 children. These children were
baptized in the North Mill Creek Luthern Church which stood where the Brake Church of the Brethren is now.
In the cemetery of this church lies the body of this Revolutionary War Soldier, marked with a field stone bearing
the name of Cichman Our. In 1988 the Veteran Administration used the name and recorded it in the new
ancestor list in March 1985. On September 17, 1988 the South Branch Valley Chapter NSDAR held a ceremony
dedicating the DAR marker at his grave site. Besides DAR members friends and relatives attending were
descendants of the 5th, 6th, and 7th generations.
Sigmon and family lived on the land leased to him in 1790 and 1797 until he sold it in 1812.

appeared on the census of 1782 at Hampshire, Virginia.9

"John Ours, a brother of the George Casto's second wife, owned the next farm, which was about a mile and a
half from Mill Creek. He came out from the Buckhannon River, and married Mary Bonnet, a daughter of
William Bonnet, who lived above Ripley. After a few years he sold the farm to Enoch C. Thomas, and he
crossed into Ohio to make his home. Children were: James Ours, Lewis Ours, Henry Ours, Matilda Ours,
Jehu\Joshua Ours, John Ours, Nicholas Ours."14

Being the youngest son, some considerable attention was given to his education in the public schools and the
Normal and Classical Academy at Buckhannon. He began the teaching of school, which profession he followed
without cessation for 15 years. All of his schools gave such satisfaction from the first that he had to pay but one
board bill in all those years. He always taught near home. For two years was a member of the board of
examiners of Upshur County. He was a Sheriff of Upshur County.
He was very active in politics from young manhood, was a member of the Republican Executive Committee of
Upshur County for 12 years and chairman for one term.17
