Jeanie,I have come across no records about the parents of James Auchmuty who married Mary Wilson.
There are a number of Auchmuty/Ahmuty men who appear in the Ballymahon area of Co Longford around about 1800 whose father(s) is(are) as yet unknown.(There is also in the area people of the line of Rev Samuel Auchmuty, Rector of the parish of Shrule or Ballymahon; this line is well documented both up and down.)
There is however a clue about the unknown father(s).Thomas Gordon Auchmuty of Brienstown writing in 1828 says there was an illegitimate son, he suggests of Thomas of Rathfarnham, who settled near Ballymahon. He goes on to say that this man was Rector of Ballymahon though in this he was clearly wrong.
Another clue is that among the alumni of Trintiy College Dublin there were two Johns listed, one as Auchmuty the other with a variant spelling. The former is clearly the son of Rev James Auchmuty Dean of Armagh, the latter, if he is a true listing just might be the illegitimate man.
There is another possibility - an X Auchmuty, first name not known, whose marriage record gives him of Meath St, Dublin where the Auchmuty wine merchant Townley Auchmuty built himself a house.Thomas of Rathfarnham worked with Townley. X too could be this illegitimate man and could have moved to Ballymahon but this is all in the realms of speculation.
Judge Robert Auchmuty moved to New England in the early 1740s.His parents were Capt John and Isabella Stirling.John's older brother was Capt Arthur whose line leads down to Thomas of Rathfarnham. For the descendants of Robert read Annette Townsend's book The Auchmuty Family of Scotland and America, 1938.
