I was struck by your comment that Elizabeth Desmarais (or it could have been Butler).

I have been tracing my wife's Desmarais family and find that for three generations they seem to have used the Butler name. I have Damien Desmarais who was known as James Butler (of New Bedford, MA), James Desmarais who was known as James Butler (of Taunton, MA) and George DeMar, known as "Butler".
