I am interested in finding out the origins of my ATTWOOD family. This is what I have so far, but I could use some help or advice. There was a couple, Nicolas Attwood and Elizabeth Gosling, who were married in Arlington, Sussex, somewhere in the late 1700s (I apologize for the vagueness, but I am away from my records at the moment.) I would like to find out if they are the parents of this Nicholas Attwood. 1 Nicholas Attwood .. +Elizabeth Cornwell m: May 10, 1806 in Hurstmonceux, Sussex, England This couple may be the parents of this family whose father was a Nicholas Attwood and whose mother was an Elizabeth. There was no record a Nicholas and Elizabeth's marriage in Selmeston, just their children's christinings. ..... 2 John Attwood b: May 22, 1808 in Selmeston, Sussex, England ..... 2 Nicholas Attwood b: December 31, 1809 in Selmeston, Sussex, England ......... +Mary Avis m: April 26, 1832 in Waldron, Sussex, England .............. 3 Nicholas (Samuel) Attwood b: 1832-33 in or near Waldron, Sussex, England .............. 3 William Attwood bc: 1834 in or near Waldron, Sussex, England ..... 2 Samuel Attwood b: October 13, 1811 in Selmeston, Sussex, England ..... 2 Elizabeth Attwood b: January 17, 1813 in Selmeston, Sussex, England ......... +George Richardson b: Abt. 1804 in Kingston, England ..... 2 John Attwood b: Abt. 1812 Elizabeth, her husband George Richardson, and their children Owen and Obed, are listed in the censuses of Isling. Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth, is living with them and has entered her birthplace as Framfield. Perhaps she is the Elizabeth Cornwell who was born in 1782 to William and Ann Cornwall in Framfield?? Nicholas and Mary (Avis) are not in the 1841 census, but their sons Nicholas S. (a gg-grandfather of ours) and William were living with the household of Sarah Moon in Little London, Sussex (not far from Waldron). In 1848, Nicholas S. is registered in London and has a seamens ticket. He is aged 16 and his land residence is listed as Wandsworth. He apparently emigrated to the US before 1854 (possibly via San Francisco) and in 1858 he filed for citizenship in Detroit, Michigan (changing his name to Atwood). By the 1860 US census he was married to Julia (either Sutton or Selden) who had been born in Ohio, and they had four children (including a son named Nicholas). He apparently left his wife, began going by the name Samuel, and married another Ohioan girl, Agness Carpenter in Lake Co., Ohio in 1865. They also had four children and for a while lived in or near Cleveland. He was a ship captain on the Great Lakes for 25 years, then partnered with a man in a coal distribution business in Cleveland. By the mid-1890s, he married (Mrs.?) Winniford Bohring there in Cleveland. Sometime between the marriage and 1900, they moved to Battle Wharf, Alabama where they were noted as 'farming'. Then by the 1910 census, they owned a fruit farm in Barry Co., Missouri. Actually, Nicholas died that February, so he was not listed on the 1910 census. He is buried in Barry Co. There seems to be a stong tradition of the name 'Nicholas' in the line. I am also interested in finding out if anyone knows these Attwoods, are related to the Attwood family out of Surrey (the one that goes back to Peter DeWyckhurst, c 1182) which also has a number of Nicholas Attwoods in it. I also found several in the Dallington area in the early 1700s (a Nicholas Attwood married to Mary Weaver in Dallington in Sept, 1729, and one married to Anne Stevenson in Mar., 1730.) And I don't know if they are connected to the Surrey Attwoods. or to my Attwoods. So if any can help me out with ANY info or suggestions or perhaps even connections :-D , I'd love to hear from you. Success in all your searches, and Happy Hunting!!! Kathy Atwood kate81055@yahoo.com Notify Administrator about this message?
