I am hoping that someone can help me identify a possible connection between the surnames ATWOOD and GILLIAM Virginia.
John M Mason b1806 d1886 in Va., m1842 Martha J Gilliam b1815 d1875 in Va. John and Martha named one of their sons John Atwood Mason.
We have been trying to find the parents of this Martha J Gilliam without any luck. We know that the Atwood's and Gilliams were acquaintances in Prince Edward Co., Va. as proved by the various documents on file.
In 1761, Elizabeth Atwood witnessed a deed between Charles Gilliam and Frances his wife to Abel Thaxton.
In 1774 William Atwood and Sarah his wife, and Charles Wade.. land given to William Atwood by his father James (deceased) This deed was witnessed by John Gillon (Gilliam). Also in 1774 James Atwood and James Cross document concerning slaves, witnessed by John Gillon (Gilliam ).
The will of James Atwood, 1757, Charles Gilliam was a witness.
Was there a marriage between the Gilliams and the Atwoods? Was Martha J Gilliam's mother an Atwood? Was Martha J Gilliam's gr. mother an Atwood? Who
was son John Atwood Mason named after?
These are questions that we can find no answers to without the possible help from an Atwood researcher.
Any help or information will be greatly appreciated.
