Here is another piece to the puzzle: from Abstracts of Wills and Estate Records of Rowan County, NC, 1753-1805 by Mrs. Stahl Linn, Jr. "C:258. John (x) Atwood. 26 Aug. 1799., prb. 1800. Sister, Fanny Batts Atwood, to have estate from my grandmother Liggen [sic] in Va., and a debt due from Alexander Norton. Nephew: John Norton, son of my sister and Alexander Norton, to have the estate of my grandfather James Atwood of Va. Exr: Fanny Batts Atwood. Wit. Max Chambers, John Chambers." Although he does not name the sister married to Alexander Norton, Peyton Carter in Post #3562 on the Genforum/Norton Family board, writes, "Is the Alexander Norton you mention the same one that marries Mary Atwood in Pittsylvania on Dec. 1, 1785?" (Does anyone know what his citation for this marriage is?) When Sarah Ligon died in 1784 (see Atwood post #1327 to which I am responding), she names a daughter, Sarah Atwood who is the wife of William Atwood, a son of James Atwood. William Atwood and Sarah Ligon Atwood have five living children in July, 1784 when Sarah Ligon's will is probated: James, John, William, Elizabeth, and Mary. So, this John Atwood in Rowan, NC is definetly the son of William Atwood and grandson of James Atwood. And the unnamed sister married to Alexander Norton is almost certainly Mary Atwood. The Fanny Batts Atwood is possibly a sister born after the 1784 death of Sarah Ligon. Fanny is most likely a nickname for Francis, a common name in this Atwood family. There was also a William Atwood in the 1800 Rowan, NC federal census. There was also a William Atwood in the 1790 Stokes, NC federal census. Also, on "3 June 1790 William Atwood to James Davis, 8 pounds Virginia money, Negro woman named Sukey and child, Theny 4 years old. Witnesses: William Walker, Major Wilkenson, and John Davis. Signed: William Atwood and Sarah (x) Atwood." Stokes County, North Carolina Wills, Vol. I-IV, 1790-1864, p. 12. Note: James Atwood Sr. gave William Atwood's wife Sarah 2 Negro slaves named Gabriel and Scukey. My interpretation of these facts: William and Sarah Atwood and their family leave Prince Edward, Va between 1784 and 1790 and move to Stokes, NC and then by 1800 on down to Rowan. Still trying to trace them after that. Where did the "Batts" name come from? Notify Administrator about this message?
