Roger:
I researched James a little while in Ireland in 1998-1999.The best info is to be had in the Co. Kerry Folk Museum, and a MariaO'Sullivan there, who I think did the research for Blennerville, Gateway to Tralee's Past, a great book you can buy at the site of the Jeannie Johnson's building.
It says, on p. 173, "James was one of three brothers from Cork."Arthur and John were the others. There were many Attridges around there, back to a John (d, 1830's? )and his son Richard Atte(sic)ridge (d. 1847?) buried in the old Castle cemetary south of Castletownsend (worth a visit for the view).
There was a Bridie Attridge I met still living in a little village of Fornaught just north of town, who father was John and whose grandfather was James. As a cruel twist, my grandfather Michael's (emigrated in 1904) father was James and his grandfather was names John, per James marriage cert.)
In the National Registry, the records are from 1863, and list many births and deaths of Attridge in the parish of Union Hall in these years, but I could find any direct link to Capt. James to anyone. Also, there are copies of the local church records at the National Registry, but the pages when microfilmed were getting very hard to read, as were the microfilms. Also, the local paster doesn't allow looking at the records themselves, at least as of 1999, although he's quite nice.
Lastly, a retired clerk in Skibbereen named Mr. Ryan, did research for an insurance man from Canada (could that have been John G of Hamilton), and concluded that the Attridge's settled Cork after Cromwll's invasion. This was seconded by a local shenanchie (historian) named Mr. Hurley of Union Hall, and two historians I met at the Castle pub in Dunmanway, who said they remembered that there was a commander Attridge listed in Pynch's history of Cromwell.I've yet to find it, but have only tried a few card catalogues in Dublin.
Good luck on your trip. Please email me at your convenience. ([email protected])
