Hi Rita,
Just noticed your post re Iva Hedges. She was, indeed, married to James William Attkisson, 'n they had a son, Luther, b. 1 Feb 1893.Ida died 11 Sept 1893 (I understand from complications of childbirth).
Iva's sister was taking care of Luther 'n one morning when she attempted to start the morning fire, she poured kerosene on the ashes 'n it exploded. She perished 'n Luther was holding onto her skirts 'n died, too, 27 March 1895.
If you'll send me your address, I'll send you pics of both Iva's 'n Luther's tombstones. My scanner isn't compatible with XP 'n I'm about to get Vista 'n will probably get a scanner at the same time.
You'll notice in the pics that Uncle Jim spelled Iva's 'n Luther's name with only one "s".He told his Dad, Absolem Chelton Attkisson, that he thought the name should be shortened. His Dad told him that he was welcome to spell the name any way he wanted to, but when the estate was settled, only the Attkissons would inherit.I have a pic of Uncle Jim's tombstone 'n he spelled his name with two "ss".
James William Attkisson was my grandfather's, Samuel Benjamin Attkisson, brother, 'n he later married Mary Elizabeth Watson who was his 2nd cousin, once removed (Her grdfather, Archibald Watson, was Uncle Jim's mother's, Malinda Ann Watson, 1st cousin).
Hope this solves your mystery. Would love to hear from you.
Later,
Elaine Evans
