I am trying to help an Attaway find her roots. Her father, Joe Attaway (prob. Joseph) was born 10 Apr 1895 in Blanchard, Caddo, LA. & died 26 Oct 1946 at his home in Longview, Gregg, Texas, when my friend was 20yrs old.
Joe Attaway married 21 Dec 1919 in Lafayette Co., AR to Julia Ann Ford. (d/o Marcus H. Ford & Kate S. Featherston) b. Oct 1861 in LA & died 1932 in Lewisville, Lafayette, AR.
Clara's two older siblings were born in Homer, Claiborne, LA (twin girls) and Clara (1926) and her brother were born in El Dorado, Union, AR. In the 1920 census Joe & Julia are roomers in the Ingram home while working in the oil field (mother b. LA, father USA). In 1930 the family was in El Dorado, AR (both his parents b. LA) Clara said that her grandfather Attaway's name was Charlie (Charles?) and he died long before she was born (abt 1902). Clara and her younger brother are the only ones still living. The family settled in TX and Clara never knew any Attaways (that she remembered) while growing up in TX.
I found Charlie & Bettie (Flowers) Attaway in Wood Co., TX in 1900 census with children Joe, 5 & Lela 3. (Clara remembered the Flowers name) They were living in the home of Joe's widowed mother, Sarah J. Attaway, born May 1845 in AL. This census had the names of daus. Minnie & Bettie reversed. Bettie was 24 and not Minnie. Also the birth states are wrong on some. The person who gave the data may have guessed. When Charlie died, Bettie married Wm. Randolph Kent in 1904.
I have been trying to get back further than Charlie Attaway and think I may have found him in 1880 Census in Caddo, LA: Sarah "Ataway", 33yrs, widow, b. AL, father SC, mother AL. Sons: Joseph B., 14, LA; Wm. N., 10, LA; Chas. F. 9, LA; Francis, 8, TX; Ranson M., 5, TX. Also, sister Miss Williamson, single, 20, TX. (could Sarah's maiden name be Williamson/sen?) There was no places of birth listed for the sons parents. Is Chas. F. our Charlie?...ages fit
In 1870 in Caddo, LA I found a Charlie Attaway, 6/12yr, born LA, a son of Nathaniel Attaway,(c1844) 24yrs, b. AL & Sarah 20, b. AL. Also in home Joseph (entered as Jasper) age 6, LA; William 4, LA. (This may be the correct family and there were many Attaway families on this page. The ages differ a bit, but that often happens on censuses... depending who gave out the data. I think the father of Nathaniel is Elisha Attaway b. c1818 in GA who married a Mahala M. Sansom. I have found so many Elisha Attaways, i'm reallly confused, & Clara's not getting any younger! Is there anyone out there that connects to this family that can set me straight? If you can help me I would appreciate it. Thanks, Roberta
