Rickles was the son of Henry and Nancy Adkins. I don't know Nancy's maiden name; the only information I have is that she died in 1848 in Ramseytown, Yancey County, NC.

Henry Adkins was born in Franklin County, VA, about 1786. He was in Burke County, NC, by 1807 when his first child was born. In the late 1840s, Henry and his younger sons Wilson, Alexander, and Spencer and grandson Henry moved to Russell County, VA (present-day Wise and Dickenson Counties). When Henry died in 1866, the deeds settling his estate show that Rickles and Tabitha (spelled Debitha in the deeds) executed the deeds at the Mitchell County, NC, courthouse. According to one source, Rickles died in 1905 in North Carolina, but I don't have any documentation for that.
