I was recently reviewing "The Herndon Family of Virginia," Vol. One: The First Three Generations by John Goodwin Herndon, Ph.D. (Fellow, American Society of Genealogists)privately printed in 1947.On page 15, there appears the following:
Children of William Herndon and his first wife:
i. Philip (c 1715 - p 1760) m ------
ii. daughter, m Benjamin Atkins, who in 1760 was of Lunenburg County when he sold "to his brother-in-law James Herndon of Essex County negroes formerly belonging to his father William Herndon, being the remainder of his father-in-law's estate due him."....the source for this information seems to be the Caroline County Court of Order Book.
Also, according to work done by Leonardo Andrea...
Andrea, Leonardo."The Leonardo Andrea Genealogical Collection for South Carolina."
in his file on Atkins, Mr. Andrea gives the following...
"John Atkins (his wife Mary ?)died in Lunenburg County, Virginia, 1763.Children of Mary and John Atkins (as named in his will):
Benjamin Atkins
Married Lucy ?
Settled in South Carolina
John Atkins
Married ?
Settled in South Carolina
Edward Atkins
Married Mary Sullivant of Lunenburg County, Virginia
No further information
William Atkins
No data.Recent data found also indicates
possibility William might have migrated to South
Carolina with brothers Benjamin, John and Francis,
and one of the sisters.
Francis Atkins
Married Jane Yeldell.
Mary Atkins
Married Hugh Creighton.
I believe Mary the sister who accompanied brothers to
SC.She was married to Hugh Creighton before the
death of her father.
Agness Atkins.
No data
Rachel Atkins.
No data"
I assume we are talking about the same Benjamin Atkins who fathered at least two children: Thomas, Abrahm
Thomas m. Elizabeth Creed and moved in the 1830's to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama
Any thoughts?
