Atkins Family Genealogy Forum

Hello to all. I'm beginning my research on General Smith Dykins Atkins (1835 - 1913) of Freeport, IL. To get started on this project, I've requested copies of his muster rolls, etc. from the 11th and 92nd Illinois Infantries in which he served. While waiting for those to be received, and Santa to leave the Atkins Chronicles under our tree, I was hoping someone might be of help. So far, on the personal side, we've gathered that he was married to Eleanor Hope Swain, and they had only one child, a daughter, and that's where I'm confused... From Illinois Marriage and Birth Certificates, we found that my grandmother married a "Smith D. Atkins" in 1930 in Freeport, she gave birth to my father; Smith Dykin Atkins Jr. in 1931 and they were divorced shortly after he was born that same year. We found in the SSDI from Illinois a listing for "Smith Atkins"; 1898 - 1935, and wonder if he might be my grandfather. Either I'm missing a generation, or the fact that they have the same names and come from the same city doesn't necessarily mean that they're related to each other and I'm on the wrong track. There aren't any living relatives that would have this knowledge so we'll just keep looking until we find something! Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give. As a beginner in genealogy research, I've enjoyed reading your forum messages, and wish you the best of luck in your own searches and the holiday season!
